The Royal Ulster Rifles will recognize the following hand signals -
Forward or Advance
At this command, the section or platoon will move in the direction that is indicated by the signal. The Arm swung from rear to front below the shoulder.
Follow Me
This signal is done as follows - The arm swung from rear to front above the shoulder (Similar to forward/advance). This hand signal can be used to change the direction of travel to the left, right, or rear.
Halt
This hand signal halts the unit. At the motion of this hand signal, ALL riflemen will take a knee. Also, outward security is essential while the unit is halted. this signal is recognized by the arm raised perpendicularly above the head.
Double or Rush
When the command is given, all riflemen will move at the double quick towards the appointed destination. This order is given with the clenched hand moving up and down from the elbow between the thigh and shoulder.
Lie Down or Take Cover
This signal is given with two or three slight movements with the open palm towards the ground. Upon receiving this command, the section, or platoon, will immediatly take cover. The individual soldier will utilize any cover or concealment that is readily available. This order must be carried out with the utmost haste!

Close On Me or Assemble
At this command, the unit will gather around the leader in a specified area. This is recognized by the hand placed on top of the head, the elbow to be square denotes "Close on the center". If it is required to close on a flank, the leader will point to the required flank before dropping his hand. If, when on the march, it is required to halt as well as close, the leader will give the Halt signal before dropping his hand.
NCO Needed
This signal is given by placing the open palm on the arm where an NCO's rank would be sewn. When this signal is givem, an NCO will converge on the soldier that initiated the request.
Officer Needed
This signal is givem by placing the open palm on the shoulder. When this signal is given, an Officer will converge on the person who initiated the request.
Scouts Out
This signal is given by pointing at the eyes with the index amd middle finger. When this signal is given, the soldier or soldiers who are designated as scouts will deploy.
Go Firm
This signal is given by clenching the fist out in front of the body. If this order is given by a leader, it is meant for an attackto be pressed to the fullest.
Turn Back
This signal is given by placing the hand above the head and turning the hand and forearm at the same time in a circular motion. This order will be given to pull the troops back. This will only be utilized for patrols where the enemy has not yet been engaged and a pull back is required. If engaged with the enemy, the soldier must listen for the command to fall back. Usually a pre-selected rally point will be designated if a hasty retreat is executed.
All Clear
This signal is given by extending the arm to the front of the body, the palm up and facing outward. This signal is given when the enemy is not present or has been cleared out of an area.
Enemy Seen or Suspected
This signal is given by extending the arm straight out to the front of the body, palm downward. This hand signal will be given if an enemy has been seen or there is a suspicion that the enemy could be near.
As You Were
The arm extended downwards with the hand open, and waived across the body, parallel to the ground. This signal would be given if the unit was on alert and it was possible to stand down.

Slow Down
The arm extended to the side level with the shoulder, palm downwards, and moved slowly up and down with the wrist loose.

Signals utilizing the rifle -
Light Machine Gun
This signal is given by extending the rifle outward from the front of the body at a 45 degree angle with the muzzle pointed upward. This signal is given if the light machine gun (Bren) is needed.
Anti-Tank
This signal is given by placing the rifle upon the shoulder parallel to the ground, Muzzle forward. This signal is given if anti-tank weapons are needed. "BRING UP THE PIAT!"
Enemy Sighted in Small Numbers
This signal is given by raising the rifle above the head at the full extent of the arm parallel with the ground, muzzle pointing to the front.

Enemy Sighted in Large Numbers
This signal is the same as "Enemy Sighted in Small Numbers" except that the rifle is raised and lowered frequently.

No Enemy in Sight
The rifle held up to the full extent of the arm, muzzle uppermost.
